4 Perfect Meals You Can Share with Your Dog
Now that the weather is cooler, it’s time to rustle up some belly-warming grub. When you prepare your dinner, you may find that your dog is awfully interested in what you’re eating. Here are some meals that are not only cool-weather friendly, they’re dog-friendly too:
1. Meat, Potatoes and Veggies
Yes, this all-American hearty meal will fill you up and your dog too! As long as your food isn’t over-saturated with butter or salt, giving a bite or two to your pup will make them awfully happy.
When serving to your dog, make sure the meat is cooked thoroughly and cut in bite-sized pieces. Dogs will eat some raw or steamed vegetables but avoid toxic foods like onions or garlic that will upset your dogs’ stomach or worse. When giving them a bite of potato, make sure chives and butter are not present.
Some acceptable vegetables are cucumbers, broccoli, brussels sprouts, green beans, peas, carrots, celery, and spinach.
2. Pasta and Tomato Sauce
Mama Mia! Your pup is drooling over the pasta dish you created. If your pasta is made of whole grains, feel free to hand your dog some as it’s a great source of fiber.
More importantly, is the sauce. If your pasta is drenched in a rich cream or cheese sauce, avoid giving any to your dog. Milk-based products can upset their stomach. If it’s tomato-based, however, it’s actually a great source of vitamin C! Before you give them too much, remember that tomato sauce tends to be high in sodium.
Please note: If you’re cooking your sauce from scratch, do not feed your dog raw tomatoes. The ripe red part of the fruit is safe, but the green parts contain a toxic compound called.
3. Eggs and Toast
If you’re eating some scrambled eggs and toast for breakfast, throw an extra egg in for your pup! Scrambled eggs are an excellent source of protein, while a bite or two of whole-grain toast is great for a dog’s gut. This goes for bagels and pretzels too, if there’s no sodium or butter on the piece you’re handing over.
Please note: If you’re baking bread from scratch or uncooked eggs to your dog. When a dog consumes raw dough, the activated yeast wreaks havoc on their stomach, causing them to bloat.
4. Fish and Rice
When you’re creating a heart-healthy meal of salmon and rice, the smell of fish may cause your dog to drool. Salmon is filled with vitamins and protein so giving a few bites to your pup will be a beneficial addition to their diet. Before giving them salmon, make sure that all the bones are out. The small bones are not only a choking hazard, but small bones can also damage their mouths or throats.
Rice is a common ingredient in popular dog foods. In fact, recommend brown rice if your dog has an upset stomach. However, brown and white rice should be treated differently when given to your dog. If your dog is diabetic, avoid too much brown rice as it processes as sugar. Brown rice, on the other hand, has the seed coat which is filled with nutritional benefits.
